Edge Restraint for Pavers
The use of an edge restraint is an absolute must for maintaining the integrity of any interlocking
paver project. By providing lateral resistance to loads, they help to maintain continuity and interlock among the
paving units. Without solid edging, the sand base and pavers will eventually separate and drift apart as rain, frost,
and foot traffic pound away at the surface.
When using any edge restraint, the final shape of the paver project
should first be defined. The edge restraint should then be shaped to follow the border definition, and be firmly
secured to the sub base using 8" to 10" steel spikes.
All paver applications can derive benefit from using a
restrained edge to prevent lateral movement, including larger patio slabs. Contact Nitterhouse for more information
about the use of edge restraints.
The Snap Edge Paver Restraint System
One type of edge restraint is Snap Edge plastic edging -- a patented, lightweight, one-piece
system. When left uncut, it remains straight and rigid, but when cut or snipped, it can be bent to form sharp or
gentle inside and outside curves and corners, as well as other tight radius and custom-designed shapes. Its
convenient tongue-and-groove connection also speeds installation.
