Pedestals for Pavers
Pedestal pavers are used to separate decks and other surfaces from the pavers in order to provide
drainage between the pavers and the waterproofed supporting structure below.
When setting pavers directly on
promenade and other deck systems, problems can sometimes result if surface water is permitted to penetrate into the
pavers. Continuous freeze-thaw cycles can cause the pavers to heave; thereby, washing out, breaking up, and
eventually causing deterioration to water-proofing membranes.
Another variation of pedestals are high-density
plastic pedestals. The small investment in pedestals is minimal compared to the high cost of continuously replacing
broken pavers and damaged waterproofing.
Pedestal Paver Uses:
- Waterproofed Decks
- Podiums
- Plaza Decks
- Arenas
- Terraces
- Pool Patios
- Roof Promenades, Catwalks, and Mechanical Access Walks
NOTE: Not recommended for areas with vehicular traffic
Installing Paver Pedestals
Approximately the same number of pedestals as paving stones will be needed. If there are protrusions,
such as columns or equipment, the paving stones may need to be cut and fitted. This will also increase number of
pedestals required. When a dead level paving surface is desired, the use of shim plates may be necessary. For typical
applications, 10 shim plates will be needed for every 100 pedestals. Uneven deck surfaces will increase the number
pedestals and shims required.
